Tell us your idea

Self-employment is not an easy option. You’ll probably have to work harder, longer and smarter than you have ever done before to be successful, but it is rewarding.

There are lots of reasons for wanting to work for yourself. Maybe you've got the best idea ever and can see an opportunity to earn more money. Perhaps you want to work from home to fit in better with family commitments or you want to use your hobby, skills or experience to do something more interesting.   Or maybe you simply want to be your own boss.

Whatever the reason, starting up a business isn’t an easy thing to do as there's a lot you need to know if you want to make your idea into a successful reality. You will probably have to work harder than you have ever done before, but the benefits - both financial and personal - can be very rewarding.

The InBiz simple 3 stage programme will enable you to get your idea off the ground fast and give you the chance to learn the basics, test your business and get some money behind you before you finally start trading independently.

At the first important stage of the programme you'll meet with one of our trained Business Advisers to discuss your business idea and its potential. At this confidential session, we'll take into account your experience, skills and any areas you may need help with, such as funding or extra training.

There are a number of things to consider when you are planning to set up your own business:

Have you got the right idea?

It is important to try and find a unique selling point; your idea or service needs to be sufficiently different to interest the customers.

Have you got what it takes?

Business is not just concerned with making and providing a product or service. Being your own boss requires marketing and selling skills, raising finance, doing the book-keeping, collecting debts, paying bills and performing endless other management tasks.

Will you have customers?

Before starting in business, you need to know if people will pay for the goods or services you are offering.

Developing an idea is only part of the battle. Your business idea must also work in reality, so it's important that you undertake the planning thoroughly to ensure your business is a success.  Working with an InBiz Business Adviser will help.

What makes an entrepreneur?

Business is not just concerned with making and providing a product or service. Being your own boss requires marketing and selling skills, raising finance, do the book-keeping, collect debts, pay bills and perform endless other management tasks. This means that you, as an entrepreneur, will be the key to the successful launch of your business.

An entrepreneur you will be the person who perceives the market opportunity and has the motivation, drive and ability to mobilise resources to get the business off the ground.  You will therefore need to have plenty of determination. Running your own business demands a lot of commitment, so you need to be certain that working for yourself is right for you.  You also need to be sure that you have the support of your family and/or friends.
