Hairdressing Success
Anna decided on self-employment as a result of being made redundant from her position of manageress at a local hairdressing salon. The redundancy came suddenly but rather than let it deter her, Anna took the decision to fulfil an ambition of hers and open her own salon. Having fifteen years experience, a large and growing client base and available staff, as well as relevant qualifications, Anna's expertise in the hairdressing business put her in a good position to launch successfully.InBiz initially made Anna aware of the grant aid available, and with their advice Anna received support from the Hartlepool Economic Development Fund and the Women's Development Fund. Adding her own savings, Anna set about putting the initiative in motion. InBiz continued to give Anna the support and encouragement she needed, and she commented:
"InBiz were extremely supportive, offered good practical advice and nothing was ever too much trouble – their supportive 'ear' was always available"
Anna's refurbishment of a property in the centre of Hartlepool went ahead and was fully operational within four weeks of its acquisition and she began trading soon after. With three additional members of staff working alongside Anna at the salon, she has maintained her large column of clients and has carried her trade and supplier connections with her.
As well as investing in training for her employees, she hopes to introduce her own cutting and styling skills through 'in-house' training sessions and is looking to further promote the salon through competition, show work and demonstration. Anna says of the benefits of self-employment:
"I like the responsibility and, though I have always given my best working for others, it is gratifying to accept that my best benefits me and my staff directly, rather than someone else"
Anna's story is a reflection that hard work and dedication can pay off and open doors to new opportunities.
Anna attended the InBiz offices in Darlington.
