Wendy, from Stakefield, had spent 22 years working in the textile industry as a sewing machinist before being made redundant. Following her redundancy, Wendy was keen to get back into work in a job that would allow her to combine her sewing skills and her hobby and lifelong passion for horses.
Wendy volunteers at local stables and has completed a Higher National Diploma in Equine Management at Northumberland College, therefore she had the knowledge and contacts for an equestrian focused business. She also wanted to embark on a role that would permit her independence, and the opportunity to work around her home and family commitments.
Wendy joined InBiz where she was assigned a business adviser, Gillian. She was focused on her business idea, providing a saddlery repair service, and Gillian provided valuable advice to get the business off the ground, such as bookkeeping and how to source funding opportunities.
Wendy’s business, Bridles, Buttons and Breeches, prepares a wide range of equestrian items, including saddles, bridles and jodhpurs. The business is run from her home in Stakefield after she converted her garage into a workshop, in a move Wendy describes as “the most challenging but enjoyable!” Despite being initially daunted by the prospect of setting up her own business, Wendy is pleased she embarked on the challenge as she has a good work-life balance and is able to work her hours around the needs of her daughter.
Wendy said "This is something I never thought I could do, but the help out there is fantastic and makes you realise you can actually achieve your goals.
