Kelvyn (Consett)

Kelvyn, from Consett, enjoyed a career as a Graphic Designer but after being made redundant for the third time, he decided to take his career into his own hands and use his creative talent to start his own business.

He had attempted self employment previously but, despite having the design skills, he felt he did not have the knowledge on aspects such as tax, insurance and bookkeeping to ensure his business was a success.

In order to give his business the best possible start, Kelvyn approached InBiz for help and advice about a venture into self employment. His aim was to start a business providing design support to other organisations, ranging from creating interactive PDF documents to encourage a paperless office to signs and vehicle graphics to digital photography. Together with his adviser, Lucretia, they worked through aspects of the business plan, paying particular attention to parts where Kelvyn felt his weaknesses were, which boosted his confidence.

Kelvyn’s experience as a graphic designer helped him to get his business, KS Digital, off the ground as he drew upon contacts he had in the industry. He has found the experience both challenging and enjoyable, as he feels he can control his workload and balance his life by being his own boss. In the future, Kelvyn hopes to employ three to four further members of staff, including salespeople and other designers/fitters. He said:"The last six months have been both tiring and rewarding and might have been the end of the road if not for the support from InBiz, and specifically Lucretia!"
