Abdi, 50 arrived in the UK from Somali to join his wife in 2009, previously working in the area of Journalism. When Abdi arrived in the UK, he was very despondent and was not sure on what he wanted to do with his career.
He also had a lungs operation coupled with diabetes, which affected his motivation and confidence in looking for work.
He decided to go into self-employment when he came across InBiz during an outreach presentation. Abdi started his journey on the up and running programme with InBiz on the 29/09/09.
After a few discussions and with the support from his consultant (Mr. Nana M Appiah) Adbi was ready to take up the challenge. He received help with his business plan and financial support from ESF funding (£1148.16) that helped him to get the business off the ground.
All of Abdi's hard work paid off and his business AL-Khair started trading on the 10/11/09, a retail store based in Brixton selling Men’s, Women’s and Children’s wear including jewellery and perfume. The most challenging part for Abdi was finding the right suppliers and a suitable location for his business. He thoroughly enjoys the interaction with customers in addition to meeting new people from different backgrounds plus the freedom of being his own boss.
Abdul's business is currently doing well and this has built up his confidence and motivation. He hopes within the next 1 to 5 years that his business will be stable, profitable and his objective is to expand within the UK.
"InBiz have been a great help as well as providing me with a great opportunity with self-employment."
